James Joyce

James Joyce is considered one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. He penned the autobiographical novel 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man', 'Dubliners' and literary enigma 'Ulysses', that was seen to be so controversial that it was banned in America and Britain.

 

In the text Joyce is primarily viewed by Callaghan as a famous presence, simulatenously, though obscurely, living in Paris.  Unlike the other writers, he doesn't frequent the cafes, and Morley only hears about him through the grapevine when Hemingway one day announces he is on his way to meet Joyce. It seems like Morley Callaghan will never have the opportunity to meet him - until Robert McAlmon one night invites him to dine with the Joyces, and he is able to make up his own mind on the great man himself.
